Luring Beautiful Birds to Your Own Backyard
Attracting birds to your yard is simple if you have the know-how! Start off by putting out a shallow source of water, like a birdbath, this will pull in birds faster than anything else, as you will get seed eating birds as well as insect eating birds. Birds often have a more difficult time finding water than food, especially in Southern California. Once you have established a good water source in your yard, it's time to get a feeder and load it up with some seed! Black Oil Sunflower seed is generally considered to be the most widely liked birdseed as it attracts song birds with its soft, easy to crack shell. Try to go with a mix that is high in Black Oil Sunflower content. If you want to attract insect eating birds, like the western bluebird, then there is no better way than with meal worms, freeze-dried or fresh will do the trick.
For those hoping to bring in the swarms of goldfinches then get yourself a finch sock and fill it up with Nyjer (sometimes referred to as Thistle).
Birds find all of their food by sight, so be sure that whatever you decide to feed it's easy to see!
Good luck and enjoy your new backyard beauties!
